Laser Cooling and Trapping (Graduate Texts in Contemporary Physics)
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (15 October, 1999)
Authors: Harold J. Metcalf, Peter Van Der Straten, and H. E. Stanley
Average review score:

Great book to get a good understanding of laser cooling.
Laser cooling and trapping techniques have given researchers new tools to explore the atom's dynamics and control. The book gives a good introduction to the forces that arise when an atom interacts with a light (laser) field, and puts a lot of emphasis on giving the reader an excellent idea of what's going on when atoms and photons interact.

Rather than giving all the details of the mathematical and quantum mechanics background that is needed to understand the subject the authors concentrate on giving a clearer picture of the real physics involved.

The book starts with a review of the quantum mechanics principles used to understand laser cooling and trapping, which serves as a good remainder for a person who already has a basic grasp of it.

Although all the mathematical analysis that shows how the formulas and mathematical expressions are derived is not done in the book, the presentation is sufficient to guide the readers interested in it do the work by themselves.

The book also has an excellent reference guide that an interested person can use to get all the mathematical and experimental details on the field.

The Last Romantics: The Romantic Tradition in British Art: Burne-Jones to Stanley Spencer
Published in Paperback by Lund Humphries Pub Ltd (May, 1993)
Authors: John Christian, Mary Anne Stevens, and Barbican Art Gallery
Average review score:

An Indispensible book
Quite simply the best book/catalogue of it's type I have ever seen. The presentation of the book is good, as is the reproduction of the paintings. The short biographies of the artists are quite simply the brilliant, and contain more information than much longer articles. If you only have one book about late romantic art have this one.

Marvellously entertaining!

The Legend of Nance Dude
Published in Hardcover by John F Blair Pub (April, 1991)
Author: Maurice Stanley
Average review score:

Warning:Nance Dude Will Get You
Don't even open this book if you have important plans for the next three days.

*Nance Dude* grabs you from the first sentence and compels you to pick it up again and again until you have read the last line.

Based on a true story, it tells of a women who killed her own grand-daughter in the mountain country of North Carolina in 1913. You know immediately who did it, the outcome and some of the people involved, but the why's and how's are more compelling than in Capote's *In Cold Blood.*

Still Nance is not a killer story. It is a story of love, compassion, redemption and ultimately the tale of a down-trodden person, who, like *Everyman,* represents all down-trodden people. Nance Dude becomes, through Stanley's skillful handling, a symbol for the black plight, battered women, abused children, those physically and emotionally impoverished.

One cannot help but think of *Cold Mountain* because of the time and the setting, but Nance goes far beyond *Cold Mountain.* In it, Stanley carries you to every human emotion in your psyche. You will laugh, smile, become enraged, cry, feel fear, but most of all you will be constantly surprised and impressed at the buttons Stanley has pushed in you that you thought were hidden.

There is action, suspense, romance, epic tales covering a hundred years, sadness and mystery. What's more Stanley is such a skilled writer that he compresses all of this emotion and time into 253 pages. Writing with the excitement of Grisham, the fine ear for dialog as Goldman, the tenderness of Wolfe and the compassion of Capote, Williams, McCullers and Welty, Stanley will not let you alone, once you have picked him up.

Put this book at the top of your list. But remember, cancel everything on your calendar for the next three days.

(The book is -- as of 12/99 -- back in print from Marblehead Publishing, Raleigh NC.)

Legend of Stanley: 150 Years of the Stanley Works
Published in Hardcover by Write Stuff Syndicate (June, 1996)
Authors: Jeffrey L. Rodengen, Kyle Newton, and Karen Nitkin
Average review score:

Great book, very well done.
I thought this was one of the best books I've read recently. I first picked it up because I enjoy woodworking and Stanley tools are something I learned to admire from my dad. As an entrepreneur, I found the story of a small company growing into a world class leader very interesting. The author did a great job of bringing history to life. The pictures from the past were fascinating. This is the kind of book you're proud to have on your bookshelf. I found it very well written and nicely put together. If you're interested in American history, business, or tools, this is a great book to own. I would highly recommend it

A unique reference text on ancient Maya architecture
Loten and David Pendergast have done a superb job in applying architectural terms to ancient Maya architecture. This reference work has greatly aided Mayanists who are trying to communicate about ancient architecture by providing them with standard, widely-accepted, and carefully considered definitions of different elements and motifs.
